HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
My 2008 Blade Electron is basically a Model T EV. Can some clever clogs tell my how high I can go with a charger? If it has a Type 1 connection ... J1772 ... will my battery management system handle it? I mean, a wall plug is the base line ... 10 - 15 amps ... but can I plug into the system at Euroa and not blow the bonnet off? Type 1, type 2, 16A or 32A. It's a bit confusing ...

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
Yes a j1772 AC charger will work fine providing you have the proper socket and associated control circuits in the Blade.Randall679 wrote: ↑Thu, 25 Oct 2018, 19:21My 2008 Blade Electron is basically a Model T EV. No you cant use the DC fast chargers without some heavy investment

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
Agreed. J1772 is AC charging, so it uses the same charger inside your Blade that you use when charging at home. Your bonnet will be safe

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
Yes, the charge socket on the EV is a J1772 ... Type 1 ... I also have a Type 1 to Type 2 adapter and a Phase 3 step down to Phase 1 adapter. I'm becoming a Boy Scout late in life ... I'm also thinking about putting an EV bowser on the solar house ... maybe a Cylon, because I was a big BG fan. I believe these charge at a higher rate ...
Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
Hi there - your Blade possibly won't work with Mode 3 EVSEs (i.e. the fixed wall box AC ones) as they communicate with the car to allow charging. Is an easy fix if it won't though. Cheers Bryce

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
Hi there-it's not the wallbox you need-it's some electronics you need to add to the car to convince any wallbox to turn on. Search for 'modular EV power AVC2'. You just add it to your car J1772 inlet socket and you are good to go for any AC EVSE. I have it on my Berlingo conversion and it works well.

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
I've seen this on a recent Blade. If the car has a J1772 socket, I assume that it would have the ACV2 gizmo to make it work on any type 1 (J1772) EVSE. [ Edit: or indeed, other EVSEs with the appropriate adapter. ]

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
Not a safe assumption. My mk5 Blade had a J1772 but did not charge on EVSEs. The one I am working on now plus last one I fixed both do. (Those were both 'upgraded' versions. Mine was an early fitted J1772 version). Easy to test, try it on either a portable or wall mount EVSE! Cheers Bryce

Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
This is the charger for my 2008 Blade ... It's a Lear Voltec ...
Re: HOW LARGE CAN I CHARGE?
In that case, yours has the electronics. ☺ It will talk the EVSE into turning on and pull from the wall EVSE whatever the charger is set for. (Blades never pull much, so the chances of it exceeding the EVSE settings and confusing things are pretty close to nill). Cheers Bryce
