While not quite what you were hoping for, I understand that Nissan claims to have a policy of continual improvement. According to a recent blurb attributed to some Nissan executive, the company expects to have a genuine 200k range out of the Leaf by late 2015. Another comment mentions the possibility of a larger capacity battery giving up to 350k range. Providing they can do that without a crazy price then they will be on a winner. At least Nissan seems to be gradually coming to the realization that they need to satisfy the market rather than expecting new adopters to pay any stupid price. A Leaf is 'almost but not quite' within practical range for me. Present range is inadequate but a supposedly 'genuine' 200k is (barely) sufficient & 350k is better than I'm getting from my ICE beast. Financially even the present Leaf rendition makes some kind of sense considering the $5000 pa contribution I'm making to subsidize the grubs in Canberra welfare fund, middle-east terrorism & oil barons anonymous. Right now its a question whether or not the Canberra grubs change the private import rules first or Nissan manages to get a usable range out of the Leaf.

Nissan has also come up with a 400 hp ICE motor, that weighs 40 kg.

40kg - 400hp Impressive, though I would say it might last a week to before it needs rebuild

Is that 40kg for complete long motor with turbo & intake manifolds, flywheel, harness or a bare bones long motor like he is holding up in the pic?

I thought I was doing well to squeezed 200hp from my old 1.5 civic all aluminium ew2/d16a3 Frankenstein build. I did have a old printed pic floating around (before digital cameras) of me standing in my workshop holding the complete engine in two hands, basic long motor at a guess I would say it was about 50kg without the flywheel. Though I wasn't cheating with a turbo.
