Rego discounts for EV?

Post by bmscott » Wed, 27 Apr 2016, 15:35

Asking on behalf of my wife, who's been getting inconsistent answers from VicRoads -

Is there, or is there not, a rego discount for EVs? My understanding is that the discount applies to hybrids (presumably because they're still paying some petrol tax) and full EV cars are not eligible.

Rego discounts for EV?

Yes, definitely. Vicroads are a tad confused over EVs though. My pure battery car still apparently has a 1600cc engine plus 384 Headway cells.....

Anyway, just insist that EVs are covered because they ARE. ($100 discount on Rego)

Not sure about Vic, however the list is very clear in NSW and includes PHEV and EV vehicles. Unfortunately the exact amount of the discount is not shown, when I asked it was tiny ($20-$50 pa). - http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/registr ... edvehicles

There is another post on this forum regarding this question. In that discussion Gabz kindly pointed to the legislation for Victoria here :

Rego discounts for EV?

In the ACT new EVs get an exemption from paying stamp duty and all EVs get 20% off actual registration but not the insurance component.
When I registered my converted car, the software could not cope with zeros in certain fields so it is a 1 cylinder, 1cc motor. At least the motor is cylindrical.
Daihatsu charade conversion 2009-18, iMiEV 2013-2019, Holden Volt 2018-present, on the ACT's 100% renewable electricity. Kona on order.

In NSW.
Lower taxed vehicles

Effective 6 October 2015, the Green Vehicle Guide (GVG) no longer provides a 'star rating' system. The 'star rating' system used by Roads and Maritime to determine lower taxed vehicles is replaced with carbon dioxide (CO2) emission.

Lower taxed vehicles must now meet the following criteria to be eligible:

Manufacturer designated petrol-electric hybrid, diesel-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicles with CO2 emissions no higher than 150 grams/kilometre (g/km) in the 'combined' driving cycle
Previously eligible lower taxed vehicles with a rating of 4½ or 5 stars continue to be eligible for the lower tax
