DC Motors talk from WAEVA meeting, 16/4/08

Post by zeva » Thu, 17 Apr 2008, 06:50

Hi all,

As promised here's a link to the presentation I gave at the last Western Australian Electric Vehicle Association (www.waeva.asn.au) meeting on DC motors for electric vehicles. Here's it is in PDF form:

http://www.zeva.com.au/media/DCMotorsTalk-16April08.pdf

I also showed a couple of videos of the KillaCycle, the world's quickest electric vehicle, powered by two DC motors. For those who couldn't see the laptop clearly (!) here's the youtube links:

Ian,
Thanks for posting that.

Can I ask zeva to research / offer two items...
1) 12V vacuum pump (with tank) and auto switching for power brakes.
2) 12V or 120/240 V water heater (with circulating pump) 500 to 1000W for vehicle heater de-mister. If 120/240V then would need a solid state temperature control and switch. (we don't need a 2kW unit here)

I know these are available OS but it would be good to see them in stock in Perth. e.g. I would be a customer. (hopefully the circulating pump would have an AC motor !)

You could give a presentation on such accessories at an AEVA meeting.
(and bring some units in for sale !)

1) Vacuum pumps - yes! I have some coming soon, the MES-DEA 70/6E to be precise. I've got one in my MX5 already and it works nicely. Compact, relatively quiet, and with integrated vacuum switch to simplify installation. A vacuum tank is recommended but not necessary as they are happy to turn on and off automatically. They're not the cheapest units around (probably going to be around the $400 mark) but much tidier than the ubiquitous Thomas pumps.

2) Fluid pumps and heaters.. Well MES-DEA do these as well (link), but they are hideously expensive - something like $1K. I'll keep an eye out for something more reasonably priced.

You don't want to use an electric element for heating? Much cheaper, and less hardware required. (But you might have to take the dash off to get to the heater core..)

Fantastic, you are doing a good job getting EV parts to be in stock in Perth.
I'll take one of the vac pumps as soon as you can get them.

Re: heater.. I'll look into that. Any suggestion on wattage ?
