Automatic EV

Post by MikeG »

Has anyone retained the automatic gearbox in an EV conversion? What needs to be done? Does the AT need to be re-tuned to suit the new powerplant (different torque converter and change points)?

I haven't heard of one, the 2nd hand advice I have is that you need to keep the electric motor turning to keep the oil pressure in the gearbox up. Also that torque converters are not very efficient.

Rob M has done one, you could PM him or visit his web site www.evwa.com.au www.evwa.com.au
(if he doesn't pick up this post that is)
Torque converter was removed. He ran (is still running ?) it in the Mustang.

The auto I'm running behaves itself without a motor constantly running for the auto fluid.

The only thing is a slight delay when swapping from Drive to Reverse    (& visa versa), but even that is only a 'hesitation'.

Hi Martin,

What car/transmission is that?

The reason I ask is that many are common, e.g. Borg Warner 35 was the automatic in most cars in Australia in the 60s, 70s + 80s.

Most of the rest were THM-350s :-)

cheers,
Woody
