PIP-4048MS inverter

I've connected 4.3kW (rated) panels to my system due to winter/cloud needs.

During cloud-burst activity on cold days, I sometimes see the output rise to a peak of 4.5kW, and the PIP keeps going, even for 10 to 15 seconds.

I didn't expect performance like this.. I wonder if I am risking any damage.

PIP-4048MS inverter

I'd say more likely 14S of 3.7 V nominal cells; 3.7 x 14 = 51.8 V. Ah, you're probably right. They're claiming good longevity due to proprietary manufacturing stuff. Do you have any opinions on that, versus the big LiFePO4 cells? I'm inclined to go with what I know and what works, but their box is ...

PIP-4048MS inverter

I agree Solar Junky, I get plenty of power daily (~80% of rated amp hours) by sticking to 3.0 to 3.5V, outside of that the cell voltages start fluctuating, seemingly random. As regards to large battery packs, I'm following with the interest the upcoming LG Chem 9.8kWh 48V pack which should have a wh...

PIP-4048MS inverter

A few things are different here to what you'd expect... Doing alot of off-grid self-sufficiency stuff and also work from home, so have pretty high base load (several computers, three fridges, poultry heat lamps and egg incubators, UV water sterilizer, lights). So a Victron can't manage all that unle...

PIP-4048MS inverter

All good advice and I agree - up to a point. Areas of concern are space heating, water heating, and cooking/cleaning. We don't have gas. Seems that to get energy efficiency after a certain point takes a big jump in appliance cost which makes it seem not worth while, since if you put the same money i...

PIP-4048MS inverter

I was worried about that initially, but currently (with 4kW of panels) I've yet to see the panels put out less than about 100 watts even in the worst weather, so its only really a problem while the sun is down.

PIP-4048MS inverter

Thanks. Makes sense. Since this small system is working well, I'm now looking at a bigger system for a busy home+office. Current usage is 30kWh/day and instant (5 second) peaks of 10kW. So I was planning on at least 3 PIP units in parallel, a nice side effect being that means three available MPPT ch...

PIP-4048MS inverter

Has anyone used (or know of anyone that has used) a PIP system with the 1000Ah LiFePO4 batteries successfully?

(Is there any analysis of using 1000Ah batteries instead of smaller ones in parallel?)

PIP-4048MS inverter

Hi there, I'm using 16 x 160Ah lifepo4, charging at 56.2V, and then my linux PC stops the charge every day when the charge current falls to 0.05C (8A) by resetting the float voltage to 54.0V. I call that full battery, even though its probably only 90% or 95%. I'm using the BMS from zeva.com.au to mo...

PIP-4048MS inverter

There seems to be a minor bug/issue with the charge logic: Given these conditions: 1. recharging is nearly complete or already completed and on float, and 2. high AC load (3-4kW), and 3. high PV input (3-4kW) If the load suddenly gets removed, the charge voltage seems to spike really high as it dump...

PIP-4048MS inverter

Yeah, it makes no sense to me either (based on what you found, and what I observed in my own unit). I think its become too complex for them to make changes easily. It would be much simpler to wipe the slate clean, and only cater to Lithium packs..   we don't need all this complexity, just a normal 3...

I received this from MPP Solar support, regarding PIP charging logic.

PIP-4048MS inverter

I have 72.60 and there's definitely no LiFePO4 option. This unit desperately needs working (non-buggy) "bulk charge voltage" and a new setting "charge termination current", before it can be considered to actually support LiFePO4, unless you're happy to finish some days with only 70% charge, despite ...

PIP-4048MS inverter

Thanks weber, but I'm still curious why it would be charging at all if I'm above the float voltage. Isn't the point of float to maintain a set voltage? If the batteries are already above that, there should be no current flowing...

PIP-4048MS inverter

I did read about that, but I don't think thats quite what I'm seeing: Its not in float.   I've seen it in float: it sticks to the set float voltage and flashes the battery icon. In this case, it still keeps charging up to the higher CV/bulk voltage, but slows down the supplied power once it passes t...

PIP-4048MS inverter

" to send it higher charge voltage commands, for the LiFePO4 pack to actually charge at its full rate instead of trickling all day in full sunlight." There is no head room for higher voltages in the PIP4048 you would need to buy the high voltage inverter. If yo get near 60volts for the battery you ...

PIP-4048MS inverter

Well I've only had the unit running for about a week and I already am making plans to have an automated system to send it higher charge voltage commands, for the LiFePO4 pack to actually charge at its full rate instead of trickling all day in full sunlight. It looks like the charge rate rolls off as...

Thanks for looking that up.

It gets even worse: my new fridge (nothing fancy, just a standard Palsonic) draws only around 70 watts when running. I wish the power saver cutoff was a configuration setting!

PIP-4048MS inverter

Does anyone know what wattage is actually needed to make the inverter stay on in "low power mode"?

I have a 70 watt UV water sterilizer and apparently that wasn't enough, causing it to flicker on and off randomly :(

PIP-4048MS inverter

Questions for anyone with experience of PIP-4048 units in parallel: Are you supposed to have separate strings of panels connected to each or do you parallel those too? What about batteries? Are you supposed to have them sharing one big battery bank or can you put each PIP on its own battery bank? Wo...

PIP-4048MS inverter

I think the "eco" mode of the PIP-4048 could work well with big appliances if the continuous small loads (clocks, USB chargers, soft powered off computers, etc etc) were taken by something like that Victron. That would work well for me, as I have a ~70W UV water sterilizer running most of the time w...

PIP-4048MS inverter

I measured my brand new PIP-4048MS at almost 50 watts when idle.   Even worse, it drew 100 watts when powering a 50W 240V lamp. That is some terrible efficiency.

PIP-4048MS inverter

Hi there! I'm setting up an off-grid system with a LiFePO4 battery bank, and I just got a PIP-4048MS a few weeks ago. I fired it up off a 48V PSU to take a quick look. The software version (U1) shows as 72.60. However I noticed there's an additional option which is not mentioned in the manual: Optio...
