PIP-4048MS inverter

I still think they need more cooling the fans were slowed down too much, my units (the older ones with external black heatsink) get to over 50C on the inverter heatsink inside the units, so I have external temperature controlled fans to keep it below 40C

PIP-4048MS inverter

I tried the induction unit today- It is not harmonics causing a problem its the on/off switching of the load the PIP has to try and keep the voltage at 230v with a load that is going on & off so it goes over/under voltage while trying to keep up. I see the same thing when my fridge starts a drop in ...

PIP-4048MS inverter

I have a K-Mart induction unit , I also have some harmonic filters.
I will see if I get the problem and see if the filter fixes it.

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Had diodes in my mosfets but they still died I even tried transorb diodes these also died but the metal stud zener lives on doing the job. Note the zener diode is across the fet not on the gates. The spikes may be back emf from the transformer. "takes 10 seconds to ramp down solar input" I do not se...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

I built a TL494 PWM speed control for my truck radiator fans many years ago and had failures of fets (100v rated), current was around 50amps with 2 fans I put it on my CRO and saw spikes over 100v, I had some 16v 5watt zeners I put one across the fets now over 10years later under the bonnet in the h...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

I found these caps 3300uF SLPX332M080A9P3 @20KhZ ESR-0.076 Ripplel-4.04A 80V 100V surge size 22 x 50 3000h at 85C & full ripple element14 1604359 I am thinking of using them. I have had 3 AC units running off my one PIP system with SCC at 61amps during this time a 1hp pump ran twice as well with no ...

PIP-4048MS inverter

Yes fans flipped at bottom and the two at the top drawing air out. Note they are 48v all metal fans drawing 250ma run by a temp control with its probe in the top of the heat sink. Its 34c here now, 49c showing on temp control it turns them on at 42c and off at 34c. They are only screwed on over the ...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Why not put some high temp tape between layers to improve insulation, it also makes winding the next layer much easier I have found. On another note with all this hot weather I have been running my one inverter system with 61 amps shown on the solar input even had three AC units running at once on F...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

So they are always across the battery does that not mean that their working voltage will be exceeded if the battery goes above 60v! On another note I came across an interesting power meter on e-bay 100a 120v wireless with color lcd display just search on "DC 120V 100A Wireless Volt Ammeter Power Met...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

When I get the main board out of this inverter I will have a look and see how the FETs are connected with only a 60v rating if they are always across the battery then they a flying very close to the sun!

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Could you have a look at the FETs on the small heat sink near the DC connection to confirm they are really 60V working.

PIP-4048MS inverter

Yes I have the older PIPs with nice big black heat sink!
I am also going to look for some 18mm x 10mm copper bar to replace the aluminum under the FETs I have found it greatly reduces the package temperature.

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

More on the SCC: I like semiconductors in my own designs to not get hot and definitely not so hot that I can not touch them, the heat sink on the SCC gets very hot with no forced air cooling so I sat fans on top of two of my units even at low speeds the fans keep the heatsink to warm. So not wanting...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

Before taking the inductor apart I would measure the inductance. It may also be simpler to just get a core and make a new inductor with so much room even an ferrite "E" core could be used Also after the inductor there is an AC current measuring sensor then what appears to be a 20uF 550V capacitor af...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

As I have a PIP apart I can see that the inductor is potted at the bottom so not going to be easy to take apart. Looking at the SCC board it has the two connections to the inverter marked as "To Axpert" so we know who came first. On the subject of mosfets it would be nice to know what ones and how m...

Re: PIP inverter repairs and hardware modifications

I have been looking at the solar charger: Two dual TO220 diodes V30200C 15Amp x 2 at 200v thus a limit of 60 amps (another part running at full rating) Current sense is 6 x R002 surface mount (.002 ohms) in two sets of 3 There are two chargers on the board running in parallel. So by adding another R...

PIP-4048MS inverter

The 38 param is important if you have it plugged into a utility supply with an earthed neutral as it disconnects the utility neutral when in inverter mode so you need to connect one to its neutral output but when it switches to utility you need to remove that earth so you do not have two earths on t...

Some observations of early cut off of bulk charge: System 1 two PIPs 72.40 cuts off early on occasion System 2 one PIP 52.30 cuts off early often So they made improvements as I said before when the warranty runs out in Jan next year I will load the modded software. Also got myself a Esmart 40A LCD M...

PIP-4048MS inverter

When I had one PIP and the 24 panels the maximum charge was 61 amps this would go for about one hour or so even if I set the charge to 80 amps so the SCC has to be limiting this. With the two in parallel I have had up to 85 amps and average 76 amps I will in the future have 18 panels for each PIP th...

PIP-4048MS inverter

It would have been nice if the SCCs were 80amps instead of 60 because during winter you need more panels to get the amps needed but in summer you can not use them due to the 60amp limit. One thought I have is to find the current sense component and change it to fool the system after looking at fet c...
