Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

Air Conditioning compressor - 350 V DC powered, uses 12 V signal and PWM to vary speed. Might be just as easy to set it to full speed and switch it on or off from the dash. I used an off-the-shelf controller for this, mine uses a 0-5V signal (from memory) to control the speed based on the temperatu...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

The water heater should be pretty straight forward, but I think I will need a small metal header tank. Any ideas on what to use as a header tank? A metal one will leak heat more than a plastic one. I ended up using a garden hose T-piece with the T pointing up. To that I attached a small plastic jui...

Re: Low Cost BMS for Home Storage Batteries

Hi, just wondering how this project is going. Have you had success in building these boards? Just in case you have, did you make some spares that would be for sale? I haven't done anything further yet, other projects have taken priority. I hope to get back to it within a couple of months. Next step ...

Re: Low Cost BMS for Home Storage Batteries

What I would like to know is if I can modify this BMS to use with the Imiev batteries, that I think are in blocks of 4 cells (I will know more when I get the battery pack back). Yes, I can't see why not. They have been used (so far) on LFP cells, I imagine that the iMiEV cells would be a higher vol...

I have tried to find the attachment tab but I can not find it anywhere. There is a discussion thread on this topic that explains in more detail: http://forums.aeva.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5280 Go to the second post and there are screenshots of the process for posting images. Some project! I'd like to encourage photos, here are some tips to post them: Click on the Attachments tab below the editor box. Click Add Files and choose your file to upload. The files appear in a row, click "Place inline" to put them in the text. If you don't press that button, they apparently app...

Well, I bought some (thermally) conductive goo, as discussed over in this thread: http://forums.aeva.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=5555 I ended up buying the stuff that Richo suggested, part number 8497400 from Element 14. I found a very secondhand cupboard in the shed. Now relocated to the garage: IMG_20180903_081346937_HDR.jpg What's inside? IMG_20180903_163916167.jpg IMG_20180903_152648729.jpg I've strapped these up with the strapper I've only ever used once before. There are pieces of wood at the ends of the rows....

Re: 4Springs' Home Battery Storage System

But half the charge cycles per 12kwh unit? Still uncommitted and watching the tech talk with interest. Indeed, half the charge cycles, but the cycles are deeper and the charge/discharge rate is higher. Depth of Discharge: If you have your cells arranged in a 23kWh battery, and take out 10kWh, you h...

With lower sunshine energy in Tasmania, particularly in winter, My house, also in Tasmania in winter, seems to be a poster child for a 20kWh battery. We have a 10kW solar array, a 7kW inverter, two people and two EVs. Here are our figures for the past week: Sunday: consumed 19kWh, produced 32kWh, s...

Storing your LFP cells

I've been prompted to give some advice on how to look after your LFP (lithium ferro-phosphate, or LiFePO4) cells in storage. Posting it here means that others can see it, and people more expert than me can pick it apart! Particularly aimed at those with the Brighsun (ex-AVASS) cells, since some of u...

4Springs' Home Battery Storage System

Some ramblings on my intentions for my Brighsun cells. I have 32 of the 220AH units - I missed out on the 23kWh batteries, settled for two of the 11kWh units. Managed this because we have two AEVA members in the household. So slightly less power for twice the price! We have a 10kW solar array with a...

Re: Low Cost BMS for Home Storage Batteries

I've done some work on the BMS module board to fit the Brighsun cells. Here is the version I made for my car: CellTopBMS-SE130AHA_1.jpg I had some notes on this version: 1. The board was a bit wide at the terminals. Some boards had to be trimmed a bit narrower to sit on top of a certain type of batt...

Re: Non OEM Leaf battery upgrade?

Nice - any idea on price? With a bit of research, maybe a clever simple cooling system could be added too. Or in my climate - a battery heater! I assume that battery warming pads wouldn't be too hard to fit in. These are the ones I use in my home-build: https://wolverineheater.com/products/model-bh-...

Re: Reverse-cycle (heat pump) heating

Cold again, so I've been working on this heatpump, trying to get it more efficient. I've decided to put a heatsink on the evaporator coils around the motor. I had various ideas, but eventually settled on something fairly cheap and simple. Took quite a lot of work to make though. I bought some alumin...

Nissan Leaf Battery Flattening Test

Has anyone had their Nissan dealer recommend that they flatten their battery on a routine basis? Then charge it up again, and repeat a couple of times over the follow...

When I made the comment about making a "u-shaped" version, I naively thought that it would just be a bit of tweaking in the design software, post to the manufacturer and get a few spat out. I'd forgotten about the setup costs. That said, what kind of overhead is involved? With this batch of specifi...

As long as it can tow (like the ICE Konas) and as long as the seats fold down to make a flat cargo space (unlike the ICE Konas). We'd be repla...

Re: Low Cost BMS for Home Storage Batteries

I think the best thing to do is put them all in parallel and leaver them like that for a week while the all reach the same state of charge. Should make the balancing job a bit easier. I did this with the LFP cells for my car. 45 of them. The way I did it was to loosely put bolts in the terminals, l...
