Re: How to tell a kilowatt hour from a kelvin week henry

I'm a complete nerd so I love this post. Especially Claude Litre :D You learn something new every day! Here's one for us nerds, that I just learned today. You know those prefixes for really humongous quantities, like tera, peta, exa, zetta, yotta, that are increasingly seen attached to "joules" or ...

Re: PIP-4048MS and PIP-5048MS inverters

Q1 should I replace capacitors and MOS-fets or ditch my plan to make a 16S pack and make a 15S4P or even 14S6P even though that will make it more difficult to use the existing hardware. I recommend you use 14S if at all possible. Replacing the capacitors and MOSFETs is a terrible job, and even the ...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

The regen braking is good, but it's almost worth adding a switch which doesn't activate the brake lights. 5 or 6 kW isn't much braking power. It certainly feels like an auto in that will 'run on' once you are up to speed. So it will take some care and slight change in driving style. Is there any po...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

Congratulations Chris. Well done.

I was wondering why such a long precharge time. We do it in half a second in the MX-5. But I see you have no choice. It's built into the Greatland inverter.

Re: How to tell a kilowatt hour from a kelvin week henry

A correction: I mistakenly wrote in the original article: "People have died because drug dosages were described using "mcg" as an abbreviation for micrograms instead of the correct µg." This is not correct. I misinterpreted the problem. The actual problem is with badly-hand-written µg, perhaps looki...

Re: How to tell a kilowatt hour from a kelvin week henry

While researching the original article above, I spotted a symbol with the wrong case, in a table of unit symbols on the website of NIST, the premier organisation for units in the US. I emailed them about it, and received a very nice reply almost immediately, thanking me and telling me they had fixed...

Re: How to tell a kilowatt hour from a kelvin week henry

I deliberately didn't get into the finer points of presentation in the original post above, like the space between the number and the unit symbol. I wanted to keep it as simple as possible while addressing the things that actually alter the meaning , namely using the wrong case, adding "s" for plura...

Hi 4springs. I applaud your use of megametres (Mm) to give rounded odometer readings, and I encourage everyone to do so. I say "rounded" because I wouldn't want to see decimal fractional parts of megametres like 123.456 Mm. That would be better written as 123 456 km. Part of the reason the entire Au...

Re: How to tell a kilowatt hour from a kelvin week henry

I stopped correcting Giles on RenewEconomy whenever I would read about a '100 MW battery'. It got to be tiresome. What's wrong with "100 MW battery"? It's spelled correctly, and batteries do have power limits as well as energy capacities. Particularly large battery modules that include management s...

I didn't realise there was such a thing as "MPP Solar Australia". https://mppso...

Re: Home charging

But on that note I find it interesting that in order to run a 2.4kw (10a) device you need to run wiring capable of 20a. That is true, in the case of EV charging with a portable EVSE. Almost as if the wiring code was skimping all along and only now needs to be upgraded because of EVs. Not at all! Be...

Re: Home charging

In terms of the wire size, this article https://reneweconomy.com.au/new-rules-to-increase-cost-of-ev-charger-installs-in-australia-nz-86060/ Is where I read it. What they say is for a 15a circuit (which is normally on a 15a breaker with 2.5mm wire) to be used as a EV charge point it should have cab...

Re: HELP PLEASE I think I killed my cells

Okay so I’ve got a few random lead acid chargers humming away, it’s interesting that they are all dealing with the low voltage differently. All cheap simple chargers, but one is doing short pulses of 4 amps, ones doing longer pulses of 4.5, and another is just sitting at 2.5amps So what happened to...

Re: Home charging

I was under the impression that all 15a sockets had to be on their own breaker wiring Whether that's required or not, depends on the "diversity factor" of the loads to be connected to those 15 A sockets. However all sockets used for charging EVs must be on their own breaker, because, unlike househo...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

You can increase the resolution of the ADC by adding the values and keeping a total. For example if you read the ADC 4 times you will be adding 2 bits to the ADC resolution. This is assuming you have some noise in your input which is higher than 1 bit. That's not quite right. The rule for dithering...

Re: Home charging

Part of the issue for me is that they DON'T provide a wall to vehicle EVSE only a type 2 to type 2. I wouldn't be having this discussion except i have to choose between a $500-600 dollar cable or a $900 plus installation wall charger. So the gap is reduced by Nissans choice of cable they supply. ma...
