Re: AVASS cells 2nd lot

Hi Steve, I used the ones of two different lengths that came with the second batch. They are platted copper and they are laminated. I also used conductive paste for the holes and the contact surfaces. The holes are close to the right size (slightly over, which is good) and because the plates are cur...

Re: AVASS cells 2nd lot

Very good discovery indeed! Well spotted! Great there is a potential source of spares and/or additional cells. I find it interesting that they rate them as 400AH whereas ours are supposed to be 460. I've been running my 8 for months now and consistently get almost exactly 400AH out of them. Price is...

Re: GPS Failure

Hm, we have had several map updates in 18 months and have found it good. Apart from when the GPS started to muck up. That was unpleasant in unfamiliar locations and particularly in the Sydney CBD. My actual Renault GPS unit has 11 to 12 satellites even in my steel roofed garage. Not as many as a sta...

Re: GPS Failure

Gee, I don't think I would have liked having it out of action for that long. You are the second person I have heard of with a broken SD card holder. It is perhaps in an awkward spot. I have a carbon copy of my SD card because they are so expensive if they die. dd command in Linux is all it takes and...

GPS Failure

A couple of months ago, my GPS started to misbehave. Sometimes TomTom would have me driving over the ocean and on one memorable occasion, as I was driving in Sydney, there was an alarming graphic and warning to say the car was in imminent danger of tipping over! I tried many things such as checking ...

SUMRY 5kW and 6kW inverters

There are several of us with these inverters and there are references in a number of more general threads. So I thought I would start a specif Sumry thread. These LF inverters are well built. Excellent internal busbars, very heavy due to big toroids, quite efficient (standby 25W and 3kW efficiency 9...

Re: Is anyone using an arc welder with an offgrid system

Hi Chris, I too have a 2400W angle grinder. Startup current is around 65amps. Certainly if you were offgrid, I would not use a HF inverter for loads like that or for welding (at least using a transformer based rather than inverter based) welder. LF inverters can typically handle much higher surge cu...

Re: OpenEVSE Charging Station any Users?

The replacement PSU arrived quicker than expected from RS Components and I have installed it. I also needed to replace one of the 1.6A non-resettable PCB fuses which had blown (there is one in each of the neutral and live connections to the PSU). The module is working fine again, has less RFI and wi...

Re: Interworking a Sunny Island with a Redflow Flow battery

I also bought a bunch of SuperCaps last year and found the same sorts of issues. As well as the things mentioned by antiscab, I found the leakage too high and balancing them (both charge and discharge) was a pain and not very successful. I am amazed that some US power companies seem to be successful...

Re: OpenEVSE Charging Station any Users?

Hi Chris, I have not checked the code. However, my understanding of pressing the pause button (either directly or via the web interface) is that the uP should tell the car via the Pilot signals to turn off charging. I have frequently used the pause button (both ways) and not detected an issue. Howev...

Re: OpenEVSE Charging Station any Users?

In my unit, the only thing generating heat is the AC/DC converter. Also, if you build a 3ph unit, you need to be careful not to take any additional DC (for the contactor) from the AC/DC PSU which is on the limit. Also, cabling should be crimped in the Mennekes and where possible elsewhere (reduces r...

Re: OpenEVSE Charging Station any Users?

Well, after 18months my OpenEVSE has DIED! Temperature was 33degC (inside the box). Upon checking, I found that the 5v+12V DC supply is DEAD. Fortunately, I have a backup EVSE so am not stuck. The DC power supply in the unit is its Achilles Heel because it runs quite hot and they run it close to its...

Re: AGM for home storage?

AGMs can be very long lived and reliable: a. I had a 1000AH/12V set up on my barge in France. After 8yrs, they are in almost perfect condition. Average cycle depth only 23%. 4.5kW inverter. Excellent solar MPPT plus engine 4step temperature controlled charging plus 120A mains charging (when mains av...

Re: OpenEVSE Charging Station any Users?

Lobster & Jonescg, Just a note about the OpenEVSE. If the advanced one, the temperature sensor is on the LCD panel. If you wire it well, the only heat generating object is the AC:DC converter (aforementioned for RFI). If you use the box flat- as shown above- the heat of the converter artificially in...

This is the unused box.
Will dig out photos of the 3Ph unit. As I already had a Type2:type2 cable, I mounted a Type2 socket on the box rather than have a flying lead.
Cheers,

Re: OpenEVSE Charging Station any Users?

I also built an OpenEVSE last July, so 17 months ago. It is a three phase unit in a bigger box (I still have the single phase box that came with the advanced kit if anyone wants one). I use it for single phasre 32A at home and three phasesat Showgrounds et al. I included a three phase RCD inside the...

Re: Single phase charging

OpenEVSE needs no extra software. As standard it can track extra solar. However, I did need to write a Python script which extracts data from the Enphase Envoy (controller for the microInverters) and make it available through MQTT. I DID have to write heaps of software for my two lithium chargers, B...
