Re: portable DC chargers
Thanks. This 20kW Setec unit came up in an internet search, though not linked that I could see on the Setec site. It looks OK, not too bulky or heavy (40kg). I am thinking this might be left in the car all the time on an outback trip if adequately ventilated, not lifted out every time one wants to c...

portable DC chargers
Are these or similar available in Au? At a price that is not prohibitive? https://www.designwerk.com/en/fast-chargers/ 22kW from the relatively common three phase, 32A outlets into the DC input would bypass the limitations of on-board AC chargers for people travelling away from the big cities and ro...

Re: Holden Volt for sale.
...At high speeds volt becomes a parallel hybrid Ie engine does run the wheels together with electric motor... Hence the asterisk in my text above. Yes, in unusual circumstances the engine does run the wheels but it happens so infrequently that it can be ignored for practical purposes of explaining...

Holden Volt for sale. (sold)
We are downsizing to one car and moving on from petrol entirely. So, recently, we sold our iMiEV. The Kona electric we ordered is due to arrive soon, in late November 2019. So, soon it will be time to sell the Volt, a plug-in battery electric car with a petrol range-extending generator built-in. Ple...

I can now confirm that we are selling our Volt in early December. We are downsizing to one car and moving on from petrol entirely. So, recently, we sold our iMiEV. The Kona electric we ordered is due to arrive soon, in early December 2019. It still has over 2 years remaining of warranty on all its '...

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
... that's a saving of about $5000/year . Impressive! Still hard to justify the price difference to the ICE version if you are not an EV enthousiaste though... If you have the car for a decade, you save $50K, most of the purchase price. I reckon a new Kona EV is better than any new petrol car you c...

Re: 9 Nissan Leafs for auction at Pickles: 8 NSW, 1 ACT
My friend with an original Leaf said he was told by Nissan that they are now making replacement batteries to order which is why they take some time to arrive. It was his speculation that this might mean they are all 'Lizard' batteries, since it would not make sense to make two sorts of cells when th...

Re: 9 Nissan Leafs for auction at Pickles: 8 NSW, 1 ACT
I think the $10K Nissan replacement batteries are the more recent 'Lizard' chemistry, which supposedly lasts better in the heat than the original battery. We all wish this was true, and it would make so much sense. But Les Smith (@lesmando), who received one of the first (probably the actual first)...

Re: 9 Nissan Leafs for auction at Pickles: 8 NSW, 1 ACT
I think the $10K Nissan replacement batteries are the more recent 'Lizard' chemistry, which supposedly lasts better in the heat than the original battery. So, if you got a used Leaf for (say) $10K and after a while found the battery had degraded to the point that it no longer covered your local trip...

Maybe. He seemed to be very straight about making sure I understood all about the car. The reason he gave was changed family circumstances meaning that he needed a bench back seat with three seat belts.

Re: Just bought a second-hand Volt
Hi, I just bought a second-hand MY13 Holden Volt. It is doing very nicely. It drives smoothly like an EV. I have only a couple of times noticed a very brief hesitation and wonder if that is one of the clutches in the Voltec arrangement doing its thing. It turned out that the 'hesitation' was the st...

Re: Kona EV Real World Range Experience
...All my EV's vary from the average by 30% either side... Ditto. Another factor that might play a part is battery temperature. When the battery is cold, any real world cell behaves like an ideal cell with some resistance in series. That internal resistance is higher when it is cold, so, for the sa...

Re: Kona AC charging question
My Wall Charger has two settings, fast = 7.2kW & Eco=1.2kw. This may indicate 7.2/3.6/1.2 for Max/medium/minimun Thanks. I wonder if max/medium/minimum just means (say) 100%/75%/50% (or some other percentages) relative to whatever maximum the EVSE sets? Anyway, glad to know the car does something l...

Re: Kona AC charging question
If your byo 20A cable is type 2 compliant, the car will limit itself to the lesser of the cable or the evse current rating automatically. Thanks for that. I had not realised that cables also communicated their current limits like an EVSE. Hmm. Not sure if it has any such smarts in it, perhaps in th...

Re: Kona AC charging question
Any EVSE set to a lower limit will be fine. I built my 3.6kW portable EVSE specifically for caravan park 15A outlets. Worked perfectly on the EV Long Weekend tour with my Kona. 😊 BTW, from memory the Kona itself can be set for lower charge rates if you want it to. Cheers Bryce Thanks. I realise the...

Re: Kona AC charging question
Any reason you want a slower charge rate? Its only a 7kw on board charger which is ~0.1c of the pack(64kwh), you're not going to shorten the life of the battery at the max AC charge rate Yes, I realise that. I have an cable that I could use at BYO cable public charging outlets but a sticker says it...

Kona AC charging question
I have a Kona electric on order so I don't yet have an instruction book to read. I have a couple of charging questions. 1) If I am charging from (say) a 32A or greater EVSE, so the car could be AC charging as fast as it is capable of charging, is there an option inside the car to select a slower cha...

Re: Hyundai Australia Kona EV info
I'd be surprised if it didn't support single phase charging, particularly given the US market is nearly all single phase charging I am not suggesting that it would not support single phase charging. I expect the three phase charger would operate on one phase if it only found power applied to one in...

Re: Limited Kona Electric Floor mat options in Oz
A bit of lateral thinking. Not sure the dealer would let me do that. The dealer should treat you like royalty since you spent many thousands of dollars with them. It costs them nothing to be helpful to you since they could not sell you the product you wanted. They should see it as in investment in ...

Frunk/Froot for Kona
This ‘frunk’ or ‘froot’ almost fits too well to be coincidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kurEcjkVBk You can skip the first half of the video - it is just fitting a gas lift strut thingy to the bonnet. See how the moulded charge cable and accessory tray just neatly fits under the bonnet. Also...
