I've certainly kept an eye out. I'm constantly looking out for a car without an exhaust pipe - especially when I'm down towards the southeast of perth. I keep my eyes peeled for any white mustangs... hehe
Nothing so far, though. Someone needs to buy an Aptera or an electric Carver. |

Go Mandurah! I'll look forward to the newsletter.
Wouldn't it be great if all our posties used these instead of the noisy, smelly, usually-badly-in-need-of-a-tuneup ICE ones they use now. They'd have to go back to the old days of using a whistle too as you wouldn't hear when the mail came anymore! Cheers, Rob Hills Waikiki, Western Australia |

I wonder who you'd have to go to, to ask about that? Surely each individual post office wouldn't handle that sort of thing. You'd have to go to the head office or something. Maybe talk to the dealers and put them in touch with the postmaster general about a trial.

Those postie Honda CT110s are consistently the biggest selling motorcycle in Australia. It'd be a big deal if they converted to something electric. I think a vectrix would be way too heavy though, they need something that rides OK over kerbs and lawns.

Yeah the Vectrix is great but not really suitable for postal delivery.
Australia Post are currently trialing some electric bikes and trikes though. |

True, the Vectrix isn't suited really. Certainly hasn't got the decades of development the honda has behind it.
I wonder... a quick search tells me a second hand CT110 is around $1200-$1800. I wonder how far a postie goes on his route? I suppose it's like asking how long a piece of string is. I suppose they also just load up, fuel up, and go between loads. Though you could possibly have two bikes, one waiting to go once the postie gets back, then the first is loaded and put on charge. That'd double the cost though, which is bad. It'd be an interesting challenge for a conversion. |

Hey guys, while this is a rather interesting topic, let's keep it to a 'Spotted' thread please.
Feel free to start up a new topic to discuss elsewhere though.

I saw this at work a while ago, but it didn't occur to me to have a closer look. It turns out that Air BP have an EV fuel truck! It's full of lead, so it's slow and clunky, but the speed limit on the airport is 25 anyway. Apparently it's good to drive, as long as it doesn't break down. I kind of think they aren't taking care of the wet cell lead acid batteries. Though the website for the conversion company says that they have some kind of single-point rewatering system so it shouldn't be too hard. It's got a dirty great DC motor, 96v of lead. Has to be constantly recharged, but of course I don't think that's a big deal. Even the drivers like it, as long as it's working at all. I'm just amazed that British Petroleum have an EV! hahaha (Just found the conversion company's website: http://fmitrucks.com/electric_isuzu.html |

Spotted this parked up in maylands:
Spoke to the bloke next door, turns out the owner is a sparky of the same ethnicity as Nicola Tesla, and somewhat of a fan of him, so the perfect plate. |

RE: Electric Postie Bike...
I've been working on a design for an electric postie bike for the past 5 years. I even became a Postie - to fully appreciate the job and requirements of the bikes. Almost finished my proof of concept prototype - and have engaged proffesional motorcycle design engineers to re-design and engineer it for manufacture. It's a mighty long and expensive road ahead - a mamoth task to take it any further than I have. But I'll try. Edited by Carv'n Marv'n - 19 April 2010 at 6:22am |
