For Electric Car Conversions the majority of our members use cost effective Deep Cycle Lead Acid Batteries, a DC Speed Controller and DC motor. All three items are locally available in Australia. See the Links page for parts.

If you have the extra cash and want the challenge, consider upgrading to a Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium Battery, and/or AC Speed Controller with AC Motor to increase the performance and range.

To make your EV registration go smoother, it is best to convert a registered vehicle and keep the distributed weight the same or less than the original weight.

Download the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification PDF files NCOP13 and NCOP14 , for reference.

After reading and getting a good idea of what it all means, contact or better still, take your copies of Bulletin 14, NCOP13 and NCOP14 to your local motor registration office and ask them if there is anything else you are required to do to get a your Electric Car Conversion registered.

You will need to get a list of accredited automotive engineers that can approve the work and supply a motor vehicle engineering report and/or other paperwork, required to get your Vehicle Registered. Select your accredited, preferred engineer and contact them before you start.
Show them the car to be converted and explain what parts you want to remove and what conversion parts you want to put in the vehicle. Be guided by their advice.

Attend your local Electric Vehicle Association Branch meeting or information session with all of your material and ask lots of questions.

The important thing is to read, research and understand as much as possible before you buy parts.

The various state motor vehicle registration authorities requirements, automotive engineer reports and forms for EV conversions in Australia vary to the extent that it is not practical at this stage to provide you with one National Guide.
