EVs and road use charges

The AEVA has issued a statement in response to today's ABC News article on electric cars "breaking our roads".
As nonsensical as this is, we'd like to set the record straight that EV owners have already contributed to federal revenue through GST and state revenue through stamp duty. Moreover, we see nothing wrong with recovering the cost of road maintenance through a pay-per-use arrangement - all Australians benefit from a well-constructed road network, even if you don't own a vehicle. But the damage ICE vehicles do to our environment, and in particular air quality should be paid for as well.
