AEVA AGM and EV Festival 2014

The 41st Annual General Meeting of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association was held at the Moreland Civic Centre, Bell Street, Coburg.  The Melbourne branch of the AEVA put on a fantastic show, starting with the Electric Future seminar series on Saturday.  Speakers included Professor Steven Bygraves from Beyond Zero Emissions, Peter McArthur from Chargepoint Australia and Dr Clint Steele from Swinburne University.  Dr Chris Jones from the Perth branch of AEVA gave a presentation on the progress of the RAC Electric Highway in the state's southwest, while Bryce Gaton summarised many of the benefits of electric drive. Talks by the Moreland Council, Paul Paton on batteries and Victorian Greens MLA Greg Barber rounded out the day.

As per the constitution, the AEVA National Council met before the AGM to nominate office bearers for 2014/2015, agree on branch funding disbursements and set the agenda of the general meeting.  At the AGM, the AEVA's new president, Edward Booth from the Adelaide branch was officially endorsed.  Chris Jones remains Vice President, Daryl Budgeon remains secretary, Michael Day remains Treasurer and Eric Rodda remains Membership Secretary.  Membership of the AEVA has remained steady, with 321 financial members as of the 19th of November.  The 2015 National AGM and EV Festival will be hosted by the Perth branch in late October, so start planning your holiday now!

Sunday's EV expo was very well attended, with lots of electric cars, motorcycles, scooters and e-bikes on display.  US automaker Tesla certainly stole the show, with two Model S sedans on display.  One of them was being used for test-drives, keeping Michael and James plenty busy all day.  Renault were showcasing their Kangoo Zero Emission electric delivery van, as well as their two-seater 'Twizzy'.  Unfortunately the Twizzy is not road licensable in Australia, but hopefully that will change in the coming year.  More Nissan Leafs and Mitsubishi i-MiEVs than you can point a charge plug at, the plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander, as well as several high quality conversions were present too. Zero Motorcycles were on display and available for test-rides, while the Detroit Electric and the Aurora Solar car were definite draw cards.

Special thanks must go to Daryl Budgeon, Costa Tzalis, Bryce Gaton, and many many more from the Melbourne branch for hosting such a successful weekend.  We look forward to doing it all again in Perth in 2015!
